Smoke damage can appear to be minor but can turn into a major problem quickly if not properly identified and treated.  The most important action to take is to have National Fire & Water Repair handle everything.  Do NOT touch any items affected by smoke damage.  The oils in your skin can react with the soot to permanently damage all sorts of finishes and textiles.  Most household chemicals will be either ineffective or can actually permanently damage items which could have been cleaned if done by an expert such as our trained and certified professionals.

Do’s and Don’ts after suffering a fire

  • DON’T touch anything affected by soot – the oils in your hands can react with the soot
  • DON’T enter affected areas. Not only will this minimize additional damage from occurring, the structure itself may be unsafe to the point that floors/ceilings could collapse or exposed or water damaged wiring could pose an electrocution hazard.
  • DON’T attempt to clean or repair anything. Always contact a professional such as National Fire & Water Repair first to properly access the needs of your specific situation.
  • DON’T remove or consume any food or medications in the affected area. These items must be inspected by our trained professionals to access their salvageability.
  • DO contact your insurance company as soon as possible to start the claim process. They can also aid you in securing temporary housing and clothing if necessary.
  • DO contact National Fire & Water Repair to come out immediately for a free assessment of your situation and aid in your quick recovery.
  • DO start all mitigation work needed including board up, tarping, shoring, water damage clean up and dry out, emergency electrical, plumbing and heating, contents pack out and emergency textile cleaning and clothing cleaning. Again, National Fire & Water Repair can take care of all of these tasks for you.
